Dr Husam Haj Omar is Lecturer in Arabic and Translation at the University of Oxford and an Official Fellow at Reuben College, University of Oxford. He is also Chairman of the Syrian British Academic Association and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
He received his PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Leeds, where his doctoral research examined the role of ideology, media and conflict in the translation of political discourse during the Arab Spring, with particular reference to the Syrian Revolution. He also has an MA in Arabic/English Translation with Interpreting from the the University of Salford where he studied at the influence of ideology at times of conflict. His work explores the ways in which translation mediates political narratives and contributes to the construction and circulation of ideological perspectives within international media and political communication.
Dr Haj Omar’s research lies at the intersection of translation studies, political discourse analysis and cultural studies of the Middle East. His work focuses particularly on the relationship between language, ideology, media, conflict and narrative, and on the role of translation in shaping political and cultural representations in contexts of crisis and geopolitical transformation.
He has taught and lectured at a range of universities and educational institutions in the United Kingdom and internationally, and has supervised research in discourse analysis and translation studies. His academic work has appeared in several UK and international journals in the fields of Translation Studies and Middle Eastern Studies.
Dr Haj Omar is the author of "Rasheed Abdulrahman: Pioneers of Fine Art in Oman" published in April, 2026. Alongside his academic research, he contributes political commentary to Arabic and English speaking media platforms and regularly presents his work at international academic conferences.
