Jakub Bijak

Biography

Jakub is Professor of Demographic Science at the Demographic Science Unit, Nuffield Department of Population Health, and the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science. He has over 25 years of experience in academia and international civil service, including the United Nations and International Organization for Migration (IOM). Prior to joining Oxford, he was a Professor of Statistical Demography at the University of Southampton.

Jakub has background in economics and quantitative methods, having obtained his MSc and PhD from Warsaw School of Economics. His interdisciplinary research focuses on population and migration models and forecasts, demographic uncertainty, and demography of armed conflict, with forays into palaeodemography and philosophy of science. In particular, his work on Bayesian migration forecasting has led to shifting the perspective on the role of uncertainty in migration studies.

At the Reuben College, Jakub is a part of the Values & Society theme, but has keen interest in other areas as well, especially AI & Machine Learning and Global Challenges.
