Emma McMillian (she/her)

Biography

Emma McMillian is a DPhil student in Computer Science. Her research is at the intersection of Machine Learning and Computational Cardiology, focusing on how AI can enhance the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. It is her mission to leverage AI’s predictive capabilities, reliability, and her own equitable use of multimodal data to answer pressing questions.

She works to design machine learning models that can generate 3D volumetric heart reconstructions of the heart for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She answers questions like, can generative models accurately capture the diversity in patients’ heart structures? Overall Emma’s research aids physicians and patients in disease diagnosis and treatment.

Before coming to Oxford Emma graduated with her Bachelors in Computer Science and Mathematics from Washington University in St. Louis as well as her Masters in Computer Science. She was also a Machine Learning Engineer at Netflix working on the Media Machine Learning Team.

At Reuben College, Emma plays an active role in the Graduate Common Room as the Secretary of Events (2024-25), Racial Diversity and Equity Officer (2024-25), and the Social Secretary of the Reuben College Football Team (2024-25).
