Reuben College hosts roundtable defining ‘responsible use’ of generative AI in adult social care

On 1 February 2024, representatives of thirty organisations and individuals working in Adult Social Care met at Reuben College to discuss the benefits and risks of using ‘generative AI’ in social care. This was the first of a series of ‘AI in adult social care’ roundtable events to take place as part of a co-production initiative for people in adult social care organised by Reuben Fellow Dr Caroline Green at the University of Oxford Institute for Ethics in AI, Reuben College, the Digital Care Hub and Casson Consulting.

The ‘Oxford statement on generative AI in adult social care’ is a result of the roundtable, highlighting a shared commitment to driving the process of defining, disseminating knowledge and implementing the 'responsible use of generative AI' over the next six months. Amongst various commitments, the statement highlights a need to:

  • Develop a shared, co-produced framework to underpin the ‘responsible use of generative AI’ in adult social care over the next six months
  • Co-produce actionable guidelines for appropriate usage and deployment of generative AI in social care as well as developing a plan to upskill the whole sector in the use of this technology
  • Engage in a co-production and consultation process drawing in more people and organisations in social care
